Canada may have discovered a clean fuel hiding beneath its own rock — natural hydrogen, a gas the Earth can produce underground without factories, massive power plants, or fossil fuels.
Deep beneath northern Ontario, researchers at Kidd Creek have spent more than a decade measuring hydrogen escaping from ancient rock. Every one of the 35 sampled holes released hydrogen, with the mine producing an estimated 140+ tons annually.
But the bigger story is happening across Saskatchewan.
Canada's first dedicated natural-hydrogen well, Lawson, found hydrogen and valuable helium more than two kilometers underground. A second well, Bracken, also encountered hydrogen and helium, while additional drilling has continued across what the company calls the Genesis trend.
This could be significant because conventional hydrogen production can be expensive and carbon-intensive. Natural hydrogen could potentially bypass the most energy-intensive part of the process by coming directly from underground — if future wells prove that the supply can flow at commercial rates for long periods.
And there is another major opportunity: helium. The same underground systems producing hydrogen can contain helium, a critical resource used in MRI machines, semiconductor manufacturing, laboratories, and other high-tech applications.
But this isn't a guaranteed energy revolution. Scientists still need long-duration flow tests, commercial-scale production data, and actual customers willing to buy the gas. Current natural-hydrogen production remains tiny compared with global hydrogen demand.
So is Canada sitting on a self-renewing clean fuel beneath its oldest rocks — or are we getting ahead of the evidence?
Watch until the end to see what scientists have actually proven, what remains speculation, and why Canada's mining regions could become the testing ground for a completely new energy industry.
