Clive "Killer" Caldwell was Australia's highest-scoring fighter pilot of World War II — 28.5 confirmed victories, six probables, fifteen damaged, across more than 300 operational sorties. He was an ace in the desert against the Luftwaffe and an ace again over Darwin against the Japanese, the only Australian pilot to be an ace in two theatres.
He was also, by the record's own account, a man who shot enemy airmen in their parachutes, who wrote off his country's own fighter, who led eight senior officers into mass resignation, and who was convicted at court-martial for running a liquor racket to American troops on Morotai — demoted from group captain to flight lieutenant and out of the air force in 1946.
This documentary follows the whole arc: the bank clerk who shaved three years off his age to enlist, the marksman who taught a theatre to shoot at shadows, the 4 July 1941 death of Donald Munro that hardened him, the Stuka party of 5 December 1941, the tactical rebuild that saved Darwin, the Morotai Mutiny and the Barry inquiry that cleared him, the five counts of conduct to the prejudice of good order, and the tally the record still cannot agree on — 28.5 officially, 27.5 by one reckoning, and only 50–60% corroborable by one air force historian.
Built from the Australian War Memorial's records, the Barry inquiry findings, the RAAF documentary biography by Kristen Alexander, and standard reference accounts. The kills are real. So is the other file.
