How does finite element analysis actually work behind the software interface?
In Section 2 of the FEA Done Right Series, we explore the fundamental theory behind the (direct stiffness) finite element method using a simple and practical eight-step process.
We begin with one of the simplest finite elements—a two-node spring element—and use it to introduce the key concepts that form the foundation of much more complicated 2D and 3D finite element models.
In this video, you will learn about:
The distinction between the finite element method, FEM, and finite element analysis, FEA
Elements, nodes, and discretization
Shape functions
Element stiffness matrices
Assembly of the total or global stiffness matrix
The global characteristic equation
Applying boundary conditions to the characteristic equation
Solving for unknown nodal degrees of freedom
Post-processing and calculation of engineering results
The goal of this section is not to overwhelm you with mathematical derivations. Instead, it is to help you understand the overall process and what finite element software is doing behind the scenes.
For a more detailed explanation of the theoretical development, watch my earlier video:
Theory of Finite Element Analysis, 8 simple and practical steps (watch before your next FEA): • Theory of Finite Element Analysis, 8 simpl...
Watch the complete FEA Done Right Series: • FEA Done Right Series
The FEA Done Right Series connects theory with practical modeling decisions and engineering judgment so that you can obtain more accurate, reliable, and meaningful simulation results.
