NASA’s Pluto images revealed a world far more dynamic and geologically complex than scientists expected. When NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft flew past Pluto in 2015, its high-resolution observations exposed towering mountains, vast glaciers, flowing nitrogen ice, mysterious haze layers, and an enormous heart-shaped region unlike anything previously seen on a distant dwarf planet.
Pluto’s famous Sputnik Planitia is covered in frozen nitrogen and shows signs of active convection, while newer analysis of New Horizons imagery has provided evidence that liquid nitrogen may recently have reached the surface through cracks beneath the glacier. NASA describes this as the first evidence of recently flowing liquid on Pluto’s surface.
These discoveries completely changed the picture of Pluto from a frozen, inactive world into a complex Kuiper Belt object with an evolving surface and surprising geological activity.
In this video, we explore the most incredible NASA Pluto images, what they revealed, and why Pluto continues to challenge planetary science.
