Do you have trouble matching pitch or worry that you might be tone-deaf? Before deciding that you cannot sing, try these three simple exercises with me!
In this beginner-friendly voice lesson, we will gradually move from making one comfortable sound to singing an entire familiar melody.
Hum the pitch.
Humming makes it easier to hear and feel the note without worrying about words or an open vowel.
Open the hum to “AW.”
Keep the pitch steady as you change from humming to the open vowel “AW,” as in the word “saw.” Be careful not to change it to “AH.”
Sing a simple melody on “AW,” then add the words.
Choose a song you already know well. In this video, we use “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” First, sing the melody on “AW.” Once the pitches feel comfortable, sing it again with the words.
Do not criticize yourself while you are singing. Listen, experiment, and give your voice time to learn. Record yourself so you can listen afterward and notice your progress.
You may not be tone-deaf—you may simply need patient pitch-matching practice. Take a breath, try it with me, and have fun discovering your voice!
