Situational awareness helps people professionals understand what is happening around an organisation, anticipate what may develop and respond with sound judgement. This lesson explores how to notice subtle changes in team sentiment, stakeholder communication, project momentum and external conditions before they become obvious problems. It introduces a practical cycle of monitoring, interpreting, judging and responding, supported by environmental scanning, critical thinking, behavioural perceptiveness and contextual interpretation. The lesson also distinguishes how leaders and managers commonly use this capability: leaders tend to anticipate longer-term change and set direction, while managers respond to immediate issues and maintain operational stability. Both perspectives are valuable, and individuals may move between them depending on the situation. The lesson concludes by applying situational awareness to crisis management, stakeholder communication and ethical decision-making, where early signals, competing interests and uncertainty all require a considered response.
