Kutya: The Main dish of Ukrainian Christmas

Kutya is one of the central dishes of Ukrainian Christmas. Made from boiled wheat, poppy seeds, honey, nuts and dried fruit, it opens the Holy Supper and carries meanings of generosity, remembrance and wishes for the coming year. Together with uzvar and festive bread, Kutya forms the core of the Ukrainian Christmas table. In this video, Ukrainian chef Yevhen Klopotenko shows how Kutya is prepared and explains its cultural and spiritual significance. The dish appears internationally under different spellings such as Kutya, Kutia, Kut’ya, Koutia or Kutsya.
