In this interview, Marco explains how the unique microclimate of Milo—marked by constant sea breezes, dramatic day‑night temperature swings and sandy, lake‑bed volcanic soils—creates the perfect conditions for Carricante, the indigenous white grape behind Etna’s most saline, elegant whites. He shares why the estate has farmed organically for more than three decades, why they use traditional Etna chestnut barrels for their reds, and how each vintage expresses the authentic character of the volcano, the native varieties and the year’s conditions. Barone di Villagrande’s story stretches back over 300 years: in 1727 the Emperor Charles VI granted Don Carmelo Nicolosi the title of Baron of Villagrande, and since the early 18th century the family has been entrusted with turning the “horrific and untamed” slopes of Etna into a “delicious garden.” Today, their 18 hectares overlook Taormina and the Ionian Sea, producing wines that are deeply rooted in Etna’s millennial winemaking tradition.
