FDA Warns Empower Pharmacy: What This Means for Compounded GLP-1s

The FDA has issued a warning letter to Empower Pharmacy, one of the largest compounding pharmacies in the U.S. The warning raises important questions about compounded GLP-1 medications, including compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide. According to the FDA, Empower produced large quantities of compounded GLP-1 medications that the agency says were essentially copies of FDA-approved drugs. The FDA also raised concerns about sterile manufacturing practices, documentation, quality control, and whether some differences in the compounded formulations represented meaningful patient-specific medical needs. But there’s a much bigger story here. Empower says it serves more than 70,000 prescriptions a week, and reporting from the Houston Chronicle found that the company filled nearly 3 million prescriptions during the first 10 months of 2024, generating about $311 million in revenue. Much of that growth was driven by the enormous demand for compounded GLP-1 medications.
