🎧 Welcome to Jazz Bil Arabi — where the sounds, stories, and cultures of the Arab world are reimagined through jazz. Put on your headphones, let the music play, and follow the story behind this album. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📖 THE STORY | القصة 🇱🇧 COSMOPOLITAN BEIRUT — 1969 Imagine arriving in Beirut in 1969. The Mediterranean is just beyond the city streets. Hotels rise along the coast. Cafés spill onto the sidewalks of Hamra. Cinemas, theaters, newspaper offices, publishing houses, restaurants and music venues fill a city moving quickly between Arab tradition and international modernity. By the 1960s, Beirut had become one of the region's most important cultural crossroads. Writers, journalists, artists, publishers and intellectuals from across the Arab world passed through the city. Beirut's relatively open publishing environment helped make it an influential center of Arab print culture, while Hamra developed into a meeting place for artists, students, writers and political thinkers. At the same time, another Beirut came alive after sunset. Hotels, cabarets, restaurants and clubs hosted Lebanese and international musicians. On a single night, audiences might encounter an Oriental ensemble, Arabic popular music, jazz, bossa nova, French chanson, rock and roll or one of the new sounds arriving through records and radio. Lebanon's recording industry was growing too. Local record labels appeared alongside branches of international companies, while Beirut's studios recorded some of the country's most important performers. This collision of sounds is what makes Beirut in this period so fascinating. Arabic melodies did not disappear when modern instruments arrived. They existed beside them. Traditional instruments, orchestras, electric basses, guitars, keyboards and Western popular styles increasingly occupied the same musical city. But 1969 was not simply a glamorous postcard. Behind the hotels, cafés and nightlife was a city filled with political debate and regional tension. Beirut's cosmopolitanism existed alongside the upheavals transforming Lebanon and the wider Arab world. 00:00 1969 Beirut Buzuq 03:18 Beyrouth Buzuq 06:07 Caravanserail 09:05 Corniche at Dusk 12:09 Downstairs in '69 13:29 Hamra Night Market 16:13 Last Table in Beirut 19:12 Phoenicia Street 22:11 Raouché at Sunset 25:20 Souk on Hamra ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎧 Let the music play.
