📖 THE STORY | القصة
🇲🇦 CASABLANCA — 1974
Imagine Casablanca in 1974.
Art Deco buildings. Crowded cinemas. Cafés. The Atlantic stretching beyond the Corniche. Records changing hands. Electric guitars, strange new keyboards and rhythms arriving from abroad.
But something else was happening inside Moroccan music.
A new generation wasn't simply copying the sounds coming from Europe and America.
They were turning back toward Morocco itself.
Gnawa rhythms. Aïta. Malhun poetry. Bendir. Guembri. Traditional percussion. Collective singing.
And then they began pushing those sounds somewhere new.
Casablanca became one of the centers of a remarkable musical transformation during the early 1970s.
Groups such as Nass El Ghiwane emerged from the city and brought Moroccan folk traditions into a radically contemporary setting. Their music drew from Gnawa, aïta, malhun and other local traditions, while a wider generation of Moroccan musicians experimented with rock, funk, psychedelic sounds and electric instrumentation.
The result didn't sound simply Western or traditionally Moroccan.
It sounded like Morocco changing.
And 1974 sits right inside this extraordinary moment.
That year was also a turning point for Nass El Ghiwane. Abderrahmane Kirouche, better known as Paco, a musician deeply connected to Gnawa tradition, joined the group with his guembri.
The guembri carried a deep, repetitive pulse capable of turning rhythm into trance.
Around Casablanca, meanwhile, other musicians were experimenting with electric bass, guitar, organ and the international sounds circulating through records, radio and nightlife.
Traditional Morocco and the electric 1970s were occupying the same city.
