On April 4th, something unforgettable happened at Shafter, Nevada — the historic interchange between Union Pacific and the Nevada Northern Railway. At Milepost 18.5, with East Ely far down the line at Milepost 139.1, the legendary Union Pacific Big Boy — the world’s largest operating steam locomotive — made a stop that won’t soon be forgotten. In preparation, our track department installed a brand-new Shafter signpost, faithfully recreated from original Nevada Northern Railway drawings.
