“A LETTER FROM ELY” Last summer, Zach joined the Nevada Northern Railway as an intern. During his time here, he created this remarkable video, “A Letter From Ely.” He did an exceptional job capturing what it means to spend a summer working, learning and getting your hands dirty at a 120-year-old railroad. And his video captures exactly why our internship program exists. More than 20 years ago, our Master Mechanic, Jack Anderson, unexpectedly passed away while we were rebuilding Locomotive 40. Jack was a tremendously skilled steam mechanic, and with his passing, a lifetime of knowledge was suddenly gone. That night, standing in front of Locomotive 40, I made a vow: we would train the next generation to preserve, maintain and operate this National Historic Landmark. For more than 20 years, we’ve kept that promise. Many of our interns have gone on to careers with heritage railroads, Class I railroads and regulatory agencies across the country.
