Review:
It was mid 2023 when one of the first HP2 maps was released that had been created entirely with the new engine and showed what kind of step up in visual quality it could bring to maps: Part 1 of Advent of the Nightly Orb.
There are much older maps that already look beautiful, but this one combines very detailed lighting with a thoughtful, architecturally skilled and clever designed layout, plus many references that are massively elevated in quality through things like particles, colourful custom textures and sound effects. It is one of the absolute best nighttime maps.
I have often thought about this map since I first saw a playthrough of it whenever the topic was strong, modern maps, and even now, during only my second ever playthrough of the map, I had lots of fun with it. Paperclip does not only have great talent for lighting and architecture, but also for making a castle feel even larger than it already is. It is a genuinely large map, but the many side corridors and doors that remain locked the whole time really create the illusion of endless areas that could still be discovered.
The switch to the dungeon part comes suddenly, but it's welcome because a specific style is followed very consistently beforehand, so it brings in some fresh variety. Two points I liked less were, firstly, that some things you had to cast at felt rather arbitrary, even when they were for secrets, such as tiles or bookshelves that were in suspicious positions in hindsight but looked completely unremarkable visually. Secondly, some of the jumps are quite tough for casual players.
I am specifically not good at parkour, but at one point I genuinely would never have thought that a certain jump was possible and only learned it through the walkthrough. Another jump shortly after required pixel-perfect movement so Harry would grab the ledge, and later there was a trap that was too tough for me right after that. Since these sections are theoretically possible, it is fair, and difficult parkour in maps is legitimate, but if taken too far it can also exclude casual players a bit.
That does not hurt my overall view of the map at all, though. For me, it is at least a 9.5 out of 10 and one of the most important maps since the M212 editor has existed.
