In Exodus chapter 12, we reach the momentous center of the Exodus narrative. God establishes a new calendar for Israel, institutes the Passover, and gives detailed instructions for sacrificing an unblemished lamb and placing its blood on the doorposts and lintel of every home.
At midnight, the tenth plague strikes Egypt, taking the life of every firstborn from Pharaoh's royal palace to the dungeon, while passing over every house marked by the blood of the lamb. Pharaoh drives Israel out, and four hundred and thirty years of dwelling in Egypt comes to an end as six hundred thousand men, along with their families and droves of livestock, march out under the sovereign protection of the Lord. This foundational chapter establishes the biblical theology of substitutionary atonement and foreshadows Jesus Christ, our ultimate Passover Lamb.
