MythBusters — S14 E4 “Driven to Destruction” — Aired January 30, 2016
Adam and Jamie spent their penultimate pure car destruction episode sending vehicles in two completely opposite directions — first tackling the myth that a car could be flattened cleanly into a compressed slab of metal using explosives without being torn to pieces in the process, starting with scale steel models sandwiched between plates with detasheet explosive above and discovering through repeated tests that every configuration either produced too little compression or punched through the upper plate and disintegrated the car entirely, before loading 1,000 pounds of ANFO under a 7,000-pound steel gantry at a full bomb range and finding that the blast vaporized the car and threw gantry pieces 500 feet in every direction, and then pivoting to the opposite extreme by testing whether a standard household vacuum cleaner could generate enough sustained suction pointed at a vehicle’s undercarriage to actually lift the whole car off the ground.
