In 1971, the FBI gave a hijacker $200,000 in twenty-dollar bills, and wrote down the serial number of every single one. Then he jumped out of a plane with it. Nine years later, an eight-year-old boy digging on a riverbank found about $5,800 of that money, rotting in the sand. It is the only piece of the ransom ever recovered. The rest, around $194,000, has never been spent, found or explained. This is the D.B. Cooper case, told through the FBI’s own records.
