66歳、海外移住の盲点｜安い南国生活の先にある「金と死」の恐怖【第1回】｜The Cost of Getting Sick Abroad at 66 (Part 1)

フィリピンなら、物価の安い南国生活を楽しめる。 僕も、元気なうちはそう思っていました。 In the Philippines, you can enjoy an affordable life in the tropics. I thought so too, while I was healthy. でも、病気や怪我をしたらどうなるのでしょう。 安い生活費だけでは、答えは出せません。 But what happens if you get sick or injured? Low living costs alone cannot answer that question. 僕の古い友人は、カビテの私立病院に2泊3日入院しました。 手術はしていません。それでも、請求額は9万ペソでした。 An old friend of mine spent two nights in a private hospital in Cavite. She did not have surgery, but her bill was still 90,000 pesos. その話を聞いて、以前、家の階段で二度転んだことを思い出しました。 もし骨折していたら、治療費はどうしたのか。 もし意識を失っていたら、誰が僕の代わりに判断したのか。 Her experience reminded me of the two times I fell on the stairs at home. What if I had broken a bone? How would I have paid for treatment? If I had lost consciousness, who would have made decisions for me? 一人暮らしの僕にとって、怖いのは医療費だけではありません。 自分が話せなくなったとき、保険のことや僕の意思を、誰が知っているのでしょうか。 For someone like me who lives alone, medical costs are not the only fear. If I could no longer speak, who would know about my insurance and what I want? 今回は、安い南国生活の先で僕が感じた「金と死」の恐怖をお話しします。 最後に、今の気持ちを書いた詩「病気になって知った恐怖」も読みます。 In this video, I talk about my fears of medical costs and death while living abroad.
