Psychology of Habits: Why 90% of Them Die in Three Weeks Week one felt like proof. Week two took effort. And somewhere in week three there was one late evening, and then a second one, and by the end of the month it was as if it had never happened. That third week isn't a coincidence and it isn't a flaw in you. It's a date a plastic surgeon made up in 1960. Maxwell Maltz noticed his patients took roughly twenty-one days to stop reaching for the old image of themselves, and he wrote that it takes a minimum of about twenty-one days. Both of those qualifiers fell off, and "21 days to build a habit" has been repeated ever since. The real number came in 2010, when Phillippa Lally's team followed ninety-six people for twelve weeks and measured how automatic a new daily behaviour actually felt. The median was sixty-six days, with a range from eighteen to two hundred and fifty-four. At three weeks the average person is a third of the way through, feeling exactly the amount of effort they should be feeling, and quitting at the point they were told was the finish line. The same study found something else that would have saved most of the habits you've lost: a single missed day had no measurable effect on the outcome.
