The people who sit down and work for four hours without breaking are not concentrating harder than you. Their raw attention span is ordinary. What they have is a set of conditions, and the conditions are so unglamorous that almost nobody bothers to build them.
This video breaks down what the research actually says about attention, and why the two things everyone tries first — willpower and removing distractions — were never going to work. UCLA-trained researcher Sophie Leroy showed that a piece of your attention stays stuck on the task you just left, and that it happens whether you want it to or not. Killingsworth and Gilbert pinged over two thousand people at random moments and found that nearly half of waking life is spent thinking about something other than the present moment — which means half the leak was never coming from your phone.
