Out in the Appalachian woods, you never know who you will meet around the next bend. Most of them are good folks. The old folks up here never turned a stranger away, and anybody who walked up the holler at suppertime got a plate of beans and cornbread set in front of him. But they had their own ways of sizing up who was standing in front of them, and there were five kinds of people they never gave the help they asked for.
When I was a young man, out hunting with some of the older men, a stranger walked out of the dark into our firelight and asked if he could sit a while and get warm. They fed him. But there was one thing not one of them did until that man was long gone, and I have never forgotten it.
I'm Omer Crum. I am eighty years old, and I cut timber for forty years in the woods of Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee. Out there, you meet all kinds of people.
In this video, I am going to tell you about the five people you should never help in the Appalachian woods. Not because the old folks were hard-hearted, but because they had seen what happened to the ones who did. One comes out of the trees at dusk and asks you to give him a hand with a deer. One pulls up in a car you have never seen and asks you certain things that ought to make you stop and think. Another is bent over on a hillside with a knife in his hand, on land that is not his. And at the end, I will tell you what those old men did after the stranger at our fire walked back into the dark.
You feed a stranger because you are a Christian. You watch him because you have got good sense.
What is a piece of advice the older folks in your life always gave you? And do not tell me never take candy from a stranger, that one is too easy. Tell me in the comments, and tell me where you are from. I read every one of them.
If anything here keeps you or somebody you love out of trouble, subscribe and ring the bell.
Stay sharp. Stay humble. And remember, these mountains don't warn you twice.
I'll see you back on the porch.
