Up in these Appalachian mountains, there are hollers where a narrow road, with no sign and no fence, climbs into the fog and disappears around the bend. Some of them, the old folks warned you never to go up. Nothing at the mouth of the holler will tell a stranger to turn back. The only warning you will ever get is from the folks who grew up close by, and behind every one of those warnings there is something that really happened. Knowing it could be what keeps you from harm.
I'm Omer Crum. I am eighty years old, and I cut timber for forty years in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky. When I was a young man loading coal, the older miners told me the same thing over and over, about something waiting in the dark that you cannot see and often cannot smell.
In this video, I am going to take you to seven hollers and stretches of woods the old folks warned you never to enter. Every one of them is a real place you can find on a map today. You will learn why, along one river, the wrong last name could get a man killed, and about lights that drift over a mountain at night that the government sent men twice to explain. You will find out about a man who went looking for buried silver and was never seen again, and a holler so feared that folks finally burned it to the ground. And I will also tell you what the old miners were warning me about, and what folks saw in the dark woods along the Ohio River the year before their town was never the same.
A warning will outlive the reason behind it. So when an old person in these mountains tells you to stay out of a place, do not laugh it off. Ask them why.
Is there a place where you live that folks say you should never go? A holler, an old house, a stretch of road? Tell me in the comments, and tell me where you are from. I read every one of them.
If these old warnings have been worth your time, subscribe and ring the bell.
Stay sharp. Stay humble. And remember, these mountains don't warn you twice.
I'll see you back on the porch.
