For more than half a century, one tiny metal can played a critical role inside millions of American ignition systems: the condenser.
Mounted beside the breaker points inside the distributor, the ignition condenser absorbed the electrical surge created every time the points opened. Without it, the contacts would arc, burn, and quickly destroy themselves.
In this automotive history documentary, we explore how ignition condensers worked, why they became an essential part of the traditional points ignition system, and why mechanics replaced them during routine tune-ups for generations.
We also trace the transition from breaker points and condensers to transistor ignition, Chrysler electronic ignition, Ford DuraSpark, and GM High Energy Ignition.
The condenser wasn't banned and it wasn't defeated by a better condenser. It disappeared because electronic ignition eliminated the breaker points it had been built to protect.
