The Cross & The Tomb
Official Release
The innocent Lamb was led away.
At Calvary, love bore the weight of sin.
And as the light faded, the tomb was sealed.
The Cross & The Tomb continues this Acoustic Gospel Story Series through the Book of Matthew, bringing the life and teachings of Jesus to life through heartfelt acoustic melodies, honest storytelling and music inspired by God’s Word.
Inspired by Matthew chapter 27, this song follows the final hours of Jesus Christ from His appearance before Pilate and the crowd’s choice of Barabbas, to the crown of thorns the journey to Golgotha and His crucifixion between two thieves. As darkness covered the land, Jesus yielded up the ghost. Joseph of Arimathaea laid His body in a new tomb and a great stone was rolled into place.
This is the chapter of the cross, where sorrow and sacrifice meet the depth of God’s love. The mocking voices fall silent, the earth trembles and the tomb is sealed. Yet even in the stillness the story is not over.
The cross stood against the fading sky.
The stone was set and the guards took their place.
But death would not have the final word.
📖 Biblical storytelling rooted in Scripture.
🎸 Acoustic Gospel storytelling inspired by every chapter of Matthew.
✨ Themes of sacrifice, forgiveness, redemption, the crucifixion and the burial of Jesus Christ.
Lyrics:
Verse 1
When morning came, the rulers took counsel there that day,
They bound the Lord and led Him to Pilate on His way.
Then Judas brought the silver back, crying, “I have betrayed
The innocent blood,” but they turned away from what he said.
He cast the silver in the temple and went out in despair,
While Jesus stood before the governor, silent in their stare.
“Art thou the King of the Jews?” Pilate asked that day,
“Thou sayest,” Jesus answered, while the charges came His way.
Verse 2
The crowd cried out for Barabbas; for Jesus, they cried, “Crucify!”
Though Pilate washed his hands, he gave Him up to die.
The soldiers clothed Him scarlet, with thorns upon His head,
They mocked Him as their King and struck Him as He bled.
They spat upon Him, mocked Him, then led Him from the place,
And Simon bore His cross toward Golgotha’s embrace.
They crucified the Saviour, with thieves on either side,
They parted all His garments, casting lots as He died.
Above His head the words were written for all to see:
“This is Jesus the King of the Jews,” upon that tree.
Verse 3
The people mocked and reviled Him, the rulers scorned His name,
Yet darkness covered all the land as sorrow overcame.
From the sixth hour until the ninth, the darkness held its place,
Then Jesus cried, “My God, My God,” in anguish and disgrace.
“Why hast Thou forsaken Me?” His cry rose through the air,
Then with a final loud voice, He yielded up His spirit there.
Verse 4
The veil was rent from top to bottom, the earth began to shake,
The rocks were rent, the graves were opened, the ground began to quake.
The centurion saw what happened and spoke in fear that day,
“Truly this was the Son of God,” as women watched far away.
Verse 5
When evening came, Joseph came and asked to take Him down,
He wrapped the Lord in linen and laid Him in a tomb hewn from stone.
He rolled a great stone to the door, then left that place behind,
While Mary and the other Mary watched, with sorrow in their minds.
The priests came to Pilate, asking that the tomb be made secure,
They sealed the stone and set a watch, to keep the grave assured.
The stone was sealed. The watch stood near.
The world was still. The end seemed here.
And silence fell around the tomb…
