This kalaam does not sit still in one tongue. It opens in classical Persian — Ishq aasan na buwad, soz-e-mudam ast ee ja — where love is named as a permanent burning and every heart, ripe or raw, is put on trial. From there it slips into Urdu’s sharper ache (Mujhe gham bhi unkaa aziz hai), then breaks into the cry that gives the piece its name: Haye, kaise katte umariya? Time itself becomes the wound. The life waits on hope alone — aas hi aas mein beeti jaye — while night refuses to pass and day is spent in restless longing. What survives in the archives is less a single signed poem than living mehfil repertoire: Persian court diction braided into Hindavi folk until the borders dissolve.
The wit lives in the dialects and in how they talk back to each other. Persian speaks of the Beloved’s glance as the lover’s only namaz — no ruku, no sujood, no standing. Urdu turns that theology into everyday confession. Then the Braj and Purabi colour arrives with a grin through tears: Humre nayain daras bin tarse; Tori preet ke karan… mo se ruthe apne paraye; and the killer bargain — Sab ruthein, aik tum na ruthiyo / Tum ruthiyo to gajab huwi jaye. Let the whole world sulk; only You must not. That is rural intimacy speaking beside high Persian, the same devotion wearing two clothes at once.
Qawwal Shahji & Ensemble carry this inheritance as blood-memory. Son of the legendary Ustaad Bahauddin Sahib, Shahji holds the classical spine without sanding down the folk spark. He lets the Persian settle, lets the Urdu sting, then opens the umariya cry until the room feels the waiting. On Sur Aur Kalaam, this is that lineage heard live: language switching mid-breath, humour nested inside grief, and a devotee’s life measured only by whether the Beloved turns away.
