pumpernickel history, what is pumpernickel, is pumpernickel healthy
In seventeenth-century Germany, calling someone a "pumpernickel" was not a compliment.
It was already in use as an insult, and its roots are tied to two very German ideas: farting, and a goblin or rascal.
Yes. Pumpernickel.
The same dark rye bread now served with smoked salmon at expensive brunches around the world.
One widely cited interpretation traces the word to pumpern, an old term for breaking wind, combined with Nickel, a nickname that could mean a rascal, a lout, or a goblin. Put together, something like "farting goblin."
The exact origin is disputed, dictionaries hedge, historians argue over whether outsiders coined it to mock Westphalian rye bread, or whether it started as a plain insult for a stupid or clumsy person that later got stuck to the loaf. What almost everyone agrees on is the underlying point: this bread's name did not start as a compliment, by any account.
So how did an insult become one of Germany's most famous regional breads, a bread that would go on to survive wars, cross oceans, and outlast its own bad name?
