I headed out solo from Timber, Oregon for my sixth time riding Dirty Free Hubs Tillamook Timber route (https://dirtyfreehub.org/routes/orego...) a 29‑mile, 100% gravel loop deep in the Tillamook State Forest. It’s a ride I know well, but each return brings me something new to consider. The ride had me thinking about geology, about the foundation of this place. The gravel here is shaped by the land itself steep grades, ancient stone, and the kind of forest roads that remind you how old this landscape really is. It is a fascinating thought that the dirt beneath your wheels was once at the bottom of an ancient sea. The second thought is familiarity. Returning year after year I have begun to know this place, the bends, the grades, the smells, the way things change through seasons and times of day. Riding a familiar route is its own kind of joy. A chance to notice what’s changed, what’s stayed the same, and what only reveals itself after repetition. The third thought is the reality of a working forest. This forest is an active work site as well as a place for active recreation. You ride through places shaped by human hands and machines, and then suddenly you’re in quiet pockets of regrowth and shade. It’s a landscape that holds both extraction and beauty at once, and navigating it on a bike gives you a front‑row seat to the dichotomy of this place, and an opportunity to think about your relationship to it all. This wasn’t my first time through the Tillamook Timber, but it was my first time filming it and I was happy to have the opportunity to return here ant reflect. The geology, the familiarity, and the working‑forest character all combine into a ride that gives more than it takes, and has given me a lot to take home and consider. Thanks for tuning in.
