David Copperfield is born at Blunderstone, in Suffolk, a posthumous child, on the very night his formidable great-aunt, Miss Betsey Trotwood, sweeps into the house having made up her mind the baby will be a girl. He grows up with his pretty young mother and their faithful Peggotty, until a fortnight at Yarmouth in Mr. Peggotty's boat-house, with Ham, little Em'ly and Mrs. Gummidge, "a lone lorn creetur," ends in a homecoming: "You have got a Pa!" His mother has married Mr. Murdstone, and firmness is the grand quality of Mr. and Miss Murdstone. When David bites his stepfather's hand, he is sent away to Salem House school, where a pasteboard placard is put on his back: "Take care of him. He bites." On the way, Mr. Barkis the carrier asks David to send Peggotty a message: "Barkis is willin'."
