Late Bus -- Ace of Null From the album Afterglow, track 7 Late Bus is a garage track: the UK style built on the 2-step beat, where the kick drum skips beats two and four and lands off the grid instead, so the groove limps forward with a swing that straight house never has. Future garage took that rhythm and slowed its mood down, adding reverb, rain-soaked pads and chopped, pitched vocal fragments; the title is the image of riding home through a city at night with that music in your headphones. Since this piece has no singer, the "vocal" is a short square-wave melody written in clipped fragments with gaps between them, the way a producer would slice up a sung phrase. The harmony is jazz-leaning (Gm9, Ebmaj7, Cm9, and a D7 that pulls back home), the organ stabs answer on the off-beats, and the heavy 20% swing on every off-sixteenth is what makes the hi-hats shuffle.
