Seventeen places across Japan, and every single one of them still has someone living close enough to know exactly why to stay away after dark.
This list goes past the usual haunted house stories. A concrete island where ninety five percent of the ground is still illegal to walk on. A hotel the construction crew themselves refused to finish. A mountain that closes its own gates for six months a year. A patch of forest three minutes from a train station that nobody has entered in centuries, fenced the same way it has been for generations.
And running underneath it all, two things this list keeps circling back to. Three wartime secrets, hidden in a coal mine, a poison gas factory, and a mountain hollowed out to shelter an emperor who never needed it. And three hotels that failed so completely, an entire hot spring town had to seal its own front doors shut.
It ends at a coal mine off the coast of Yamaguchi, flooded in 1942, where one hundred and eighty three men are still down there today. Not a legend. A recovery effort that is still active right now, this year.
Every location is sourced and documented, with folklore clearly labeled as folklore, never dressed up as fact. Full sources and resources are below.
