Hanguranketha Palace, also known as the Royal Palace of Diyatilaka Nuwara, stands as a significant historical site that once served as the second capital of the Kingdom of Kandy. It functioned as a secure refuge for the Kandyan kings and was first constructed by King Senarath, according to historical chronicles. From the reign of King Vimaladharmasuriya to the last king, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, many rulers resided here.
