EA Sports NHL '96 - All-star Season 1 Whalers Game 56 | Whalers Back on West Coast vs San Jose

Heading back to the west coast the Hartford Whalers were playing the Sharks in San Jose for Game 56 for their first meeting of the season. Coach ranted about "the algorithm" in the 1st period with Hartford out-shooting San Jose 18-2 but Arturs Irbe stoned the Whalers to keep the score 0-0 at the 1st intermission. Hartford continued the domination in the 2nd period and Irbe continued to deny. The Whalers broke the ice with about eight minutes left. Steven Rice beat Arturs Irbe tight to the post right along the ice from the bottom of the circle on his wing off a pass from Adam Burt from the corner of the other circle. Keeping the pressure on Hartford dtruck again very late in the period with Geoff Sanderson going top-glove on the backhand from between the hashes off a pass from Andrew Cassels with a goalie screen by the San Jose defense. At the 2nd intermission it was 2-0 for Hartford with the shots at HTF 40 and SJS 5. The Hartford defense was really limiting the Sharks' chances. Hartford kept up the shot gap in the 3rd period and managed one more goal against Arturs Irbe. With fourteen-and-a-half minutes to go Geoff Sanderson scored top-blocker-side with a boomer one-timer from the high slot off a short drop pass from Glen Wesley. The Whalers held San Jose to only 3 shots in the 3rd period and only 8 in total for the game while Hartford took 64 shots by the end. Arturs Irbe had a 0.954 save % in the loss. The Whalers kept their Western winning streak going with a 3-0 win. Goals were getting hard to come by but the Whalers were finding a way to get enough to get the wins. Enjoy!
