Grandpa says it holds his homesickness, and shows her one thing at a time: a stamp no bigger than a fingernail, which carried his letters to his mother when he was a schoolboy far from home; a long, narrow boat ticket from the day he left to work and his bride waved from the dock; a yellowed photograph of a low grassy mound, because by the time he got back his mother was already under the earth; and a fourth thing no box can hold: the strait outside the window, with the place he was born on the other side. In 1972, in Taipei, the poet Yu Guangzhong wrote a short poem built on exactly these four things. The poem is not recited here: an invented grandfather and granddaughter retell its four images and its idea that homesickness deepens as we grow older, and the poet himself is never shown. Words to learn: 乡愁 (homesickness), 窄 (narrow), 海峡 (strait). Something to think about: why is each thing bigger than the one before, and why does the poet turn a feeling nobody can see into objects you could hold?
