An electric train reaches the end of the overhead wires and keeps going. In Germany's Ortenau region, the Mireo Plus B uses batteries to bridge sections without an external electricity supply. This documentary follows the energy through the train: charging under the wires, powering traction, recovering part of the braking energy and preparing for the next journey. We explain why a useful range depends on the route, stops, gradients, weather and timetable, rather than a single advertised distance. The story uses the specific Ortenau trains and their documented introduction to passenger service. Manufacturer maximum-range statements are conditional, and historical rollout problems are distinguished from claims about today's reliability. Battery technology can remove a diesel engine from a journey, but a dependable service still requires the railway around it to work. Germany Rewired explores the machines, infrastructure and technologies reshaping Germany. Which engineering challenge should we investigate next? Tell us in the comments.
