Children develop at different rates, and milestones should be treated as helpful guides rather than rigid targets. This lesson explains the differences between typical, advanced, atypical and uneven development, showing why one early or delayed milestone does not prove that there is a problem. You will explore how strengths in one developmental area can exist alongside challenges in another, and learn to recognise signs that may require closer observation, such as limited speech, coordination difficulties, social interaction challenges or regression. The lesson also highlights the importance of considering context, including culture, language exposure, health, environment and emotional wellbeing. For early years practitioners, effective support means building a holistic profile, focusing on strengths as well as needs, adapting the environment and working collaboratively with families and relevant specialists. Above all, practitioners should observe patterns over time, avoid premature labels and respond in an inclusive, personalised and strengths-based way.
