Explore typical child development from birth to five through four interconnected areas: communication and language, physical development, personal, social and emotional development, and cognitive development. This lesson follows broad progress from babies’ early sounds, movements, relationships and curiosity, through toddlers’ growing independence, language, mobility, symbolic play and autonomy, to the communication, social skills, early literacy, numeracy and independence that support the transition to school. You will see how development is shaped by relationships, environment, health and each child’s individual experiences. Crucially, milestones are presented as helpful guide points rather than fixed expectations. Children develop at different rates, so early years practitioners should notice patterns, recognise natural variation and provide meaningful, inclusive and responsive learning opportunities matched to each child’s current stage. The lesson also highlights how the different areas of development influence one another and how observation can support thoughtful practice.
