On the evening of January 16th, 1974, two men arrived at a house in Brisbane with a half carton of beer. A 34-year-old woman was home with her two daughters, aged 13 and 11. The sewing machine was still running when her estranged husband broke in two days later. The beds had not been slept in. The cats were starving. Her purse was on the fridge. None of the three were ever found. Police filed it as a missing persons case and left it there for six years. Both killers were charged in 1980 and walked free. For the next 33 years they told people what they had done, in pubs and on country drives and to their own partners. It took a cold case unit, a corruption commission with the power to compel answers, and 40 years of loose talk to finally put them both away.
