What happens when we don’t know what we don’t know about God and His Word? In Judges 11, the life of Jephthah gives us a sobering picture of the dangers of spiritual ignorance. Jephthah is a mighty warrior, yet his leadership is marked by self-interest, carelessness with the truth, and a tragic vow that reveals how little he understands the God he claims to follow. But this difficult story also points us to the grace of God. Israel did not deserve deliverance, and neither did Jephthah,but God remained faithful and gave His people victory. Jephthah’s story reminds us that knowing God’s Word matters. We need Scripture to shape what we believe, how we live, and how we lead. And we need one another, people who will speak truth into our lives when we cannot see our own blind spots. May we know God through His Word, live faithfully in light of it, and rest in His grace.
