In 1966, Chrysler took dozens of the most advanced cars in the world to a scrapyard south of Detroit, burned them, and crushed them. They were Chrysler Turbine Cars, and every one had a jet engine under the hood. For more than two years, 203 ordinary Americans drove them for free, three months each, and put more than a million miles on them. The car could run on diesel, kerosene, peanut oil, even perfume, and the President of Mexico ran one on tequila. Then Chrysler took them back and destroyed 46 of them. Most people say it was to dodge an import tax. That story is probably wrong, and the real end of Chrysler's jet car came 13 years later, from the United States government.
