We’re still braving winter in Victoria, but this part of our travels brings a whole lot of colour!
Join us as we explore Shepparton, Kyabram and Heathcote, with the kids’ first circus, a wildlife day out, a return to our early caravanning days and a spectacular sea of yellow to finish.
First up, we spend a couple of nights in Shepparton, where Silvers Circus gives us a very good reason to head out and do something a little different. The kids have never been to a circus before, and it’s a real treat to share their first experience together. Silvers has been entertaining Australian audiences since 1976, when Anna and Anton Gasser started building the circus from humble beginnings—and we reckon it’s still a pretty fabulous way to spend some family time!
While we’re staying in Shepparton, we also take a trip out to Kyabram Fauna Park. Part of Zoos Victoria and around a 35-minute drive from Shepparton, the park combines wildlife with bushland and wetlands. It makes for a lovely day out and a chance to slow down, wander around and enjoy something different between caravan stops.
Then it’s on to Heathcote, which brings back a few memories for us. This was one of the first places we took the van on our shakedown trip back in 2020, when everything was new and we were just beginning this travelling adventure. We pull into the same caravan park we stayed at back then, bit bigger this time though!
There’s plenty to explore beyond the caravan park, starting with the Heathcote Powder Magazine. Built in 1864, this historic stone building stored gunpowder used in gold mining and quarrying. These days it’s a fascinating reminder of the town’s goldfields past, and the walking tracks behind it take us out into the bush to explore the nearby caves.
We also check out the wonderfully unusual Pink Cliffs. These colourful formations aren’t just a pretty landscape they’re a legacy of the gold-mining sluicing that reshaped the area in the 1800s. With their pink clay and strange shapes, they’re another interesting piece of Heathcote’s history to discover.
But we save the brightest surprise for last: the Cornella Canola Walk at The Shiraz Republic, out in the Heathcote region. Here, specially created walking tracks let you head into the flowering canola and enjoy the fields up close without trampling the crop.
And what a way to finish! Bright yellow flowers stretching across the landscape, fabulous family photography and some spectacular views from the drone. It turns into one of those unexpected outings that we’re so glad we made time for.
We might have missed this altogether had we been somewhere warmer. Apparently, staying down south through winter does have its perks!
A little nostalgia, some local history, plenty of family fun and a whole lot of yellow.
Enjoy!
