Welcome to Lecture 2 of the Machine Learning in Plant Breeding series by Dr. Vikas Mangal. In this complete lecture, we explore the three major learning paradigms-Supervised Learning, Unsupervised Learning, and Reinforcement Learning and learn how to choose an appropriate approach for different research questions in plant breeding, genetics, and crop improvement. This video combines all eight parts, with practical plant breeding examples. 📚 TOPICS COVERED PART 1: Introduction to Types of Machine Learning Understand why different research questions require different learning approaches, including yield prediction, disease-resistance classification, and genotype grouping. PART 2: Supervised Learning Learn how models use labelled data with known outcomes to identify patterns and predict outcomes for new observations. Examples include yield prediction, disease-resistance screening, and genomic prediction. PART 3: Regression vs Classification Understand the difference between predicting numerical values and predicting categories. Examples include tuber yield, plant height, maturity days, and resistant versus susceptible genotypes. PART 4: Unsupervised Learning Explore patterns and similarities in datasets without predefined target labels, using examples from phenotypic traits and molecular marker data. PART 5: Clustering in Plant Breeding Learn how clustering organizes similar observations into groups. We cover K-means, hierarchical clustering, dendrograms, the Elbow Method, and Silhouette Score. PART 6: Dimensionality Reduction and PCA Understand how PCA summarizes high-dimensional data, including PC1, PC2, explained variance, scaling, and PCA plots. PART 7: Reinforcement Learning Learn the meaning of agent, environment, state, action, reward, and policy. We consider selection strategies and resource allocation across breeding generations. PART 8: Comparison, Interactive Quiz and Practical Problem Selection Compare the three paradigms and choose approaches for common breeding problems. 🌱 APPLICATIONS IN PLANT BREEDING Depending on the research objective and data available, applications may include crop and genotype performance prediction, quantitative trait prediction, disease-resistance classification, germplasm characterization, genetic diversity analysis, multivariate data visualization, genomic prediction, and exploring selection decisions through simulation. 🔬 KEY CONCEPTS • Supervised Learning uses labelled examples with known outcomes. • Regression predicts numerical values; Classification predicts categories. • Unsupervised Learning explores patterns without predefined target labels. • Clustering groups observations based on similarity. • PCA summarizes variation in fewer dimensions; it does not automatically identify biologically meaningful groups or predict a target. • Reinforcement Learning learns decision strategies through actions and feedback, with a focus on long-term outcomes. For example, predicting potato tuber yield in tonnes per hectare is a regression problem. Predicting whether a genotype is resistant or susceptible is a classification problem when reliable labels are available. PCA and clustering can help explore similarities among accessions, while Reinforcement Learning may be investigated for sequential breeding decisions using simulation. Define the biological problem before choosing an algorithm. Traditional statistics may be more appropriate in some situations. Data quality, independent validation, and biological interpretation remain essential. 🎯 WHO SHOULD WATCH? Suitable for MSc and PhD students, research scholars, plant breeders, geneticists, biotechnologists, and beginners interested in Machine Learning, genomic prediction, and agricultural data science. No advanced Machine Learning background is required. 👨‍🔬 ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Dr. Vikas Mangal Scientist - Genetics & Plant Breeding ICAR - Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI), Shimla, India 📌 ABOUT THIS SERIES This series progresses from fundamentals to algorithms, modelling workflows, prediction, validation, and applications in crop improvement.
