Locomotion is ordinarily described by reference to a moving body, its position, velocity, acceleration, momentum, and trajectory. Yet before asking how a body moves, a more elementary question must be settled: what is the material subject whose motion is being described? This paper examines matter and the material body specifically in relation to locomotion, drawing primarily on Chapter 22 of THE UNIVERSE and cross-examining the foundational treatment of primary substance and intrinsic characteristics in Chapter 9 of THE UNIVERSE UNIVOcALLY. The paper distinguishes matter as the physical subject, the material body as an organized occurrence of matter, characteristics as features or capacities expressed by that subject, and locomotion as an acquired physical process involving change of position. It preserves the methodological rule: ANALYTICAL SEPARATION DOES NOT IMPLY PHYSICAL SEPARATION. Chapter 22 presents a source-framework proposition that matter, considered as physical matter, does not move itself and that motion requires an external cause. This paper records that proposition as source-derived rather than treating its stronger universal formulation as independently established. It also examines a distinction developed during the present inquiry: observing a body already in motion does not reveal the complete historical origin of that motion. A stone's visible trajectory, an aircraft passing overhead, or a planet observed in orbit is an observed state or segment of locomotion; it is not, by itself, a complete account of how the body acquired its initial condition. The purpose of C23 is therefore anatomical rather than dynamical. It identifies the subject whose locomotion will later be investigated and maps the material characteristics relevant to that investigation, while leaving the causal mechanism of initial motion to subsequent papers.
