IN THIS EPISODE
Search the whole Bible for the word "antichrist." It isn't in Revelation. It isn't in Daniel, the Gospels, or anything Paul wrote. It appears in four verses, in two short letters — and their writer says there were already many.
We read John's letters slowly: who the "many antichrists" were, why "come in the flesh" was the dividing line, and the story Irenaeus tells of John walking out of the baths at Ephesus. Then Paul's "man of sin" in 2 Thessalonians 2 — a title the New Testament gives to only one other person — the emperor who nearly put his own statue in the temple ten years before Paul wrote, and the "restrainer" that even Augustine admitted he could not identify.

A NOTE ON AUTHORSHIP
John's letters don't name their writer. From Irenaeus on, the church identified him as John the apostle; some scholars think "the elder" was a different John. Some scholars also question whether Paul wrote 2 Thessalonians. This episode reads the letters as they present themselves.
WHERE CHRISTIANS DIFFER
The "man of sin" is read as a first-century figure, as one person still to come, or as a pattern at work in every age that ends in a final figure. Careful, faithful readers hold each view. This series does not identify him with any person, church or nation, and does not set dates.
ABOUT THIS SERIES
The End Times — Read Slowly. Every line people argue about, read in context and at walking pace: who was in the room, what the King James words actually meant, and what happened next in history. No date-setting. Where Christians genuinely differ, we say so and show the main readings. KJV on screen, sources named.
