What has changed in Uganda since independence—and what kind of country should today’s children grow up in? For Uganda’s Independence Day, I sat down with Coach Matovu, a swimming coach whose memories reach back to the country’s earliest years of independence. He shares stories of his childhood, school life, and the unity he remembers growing up. We also explore the work he continues to do for his community: raising funds for nutritious meals for children undergoing chemotherapy at Mulago Hospital, mobilizing funds for ten hospital beds, and providing donated clothing to caregivers. His commitment extends to education and swimming, including bringing school alumni together to help restore a pool that had been closed for decades. This is a candid, hour-long conversation about national pride, public services, education, corruption, personal responsibility, and grassroots action. Coach Matovu speaks openly about his concerns and the changes he hopes to see. His recollections and assessments reflect his own experiences and perspective. As an Eritrean living in Uganda, I wanted to listen to someone who has witnessed its changes—and continues to contribute to its future. What is something you hope Uganda preserves, improves, or rebuilds for the next generation? Share your thoughts respectfully in the comments.
