In 1895, a family of five kept about twenty servants, and a single reserved pew in a fashionable church could cost a few hundred dollars a year, close to the roughly $250 a housemaid earned for a whole year of her labor. The cook, the best paid servant in the house at around $100 a month, worked all of Saturday so the family could sit down to a cold dinner and keep the Sabbath. Below stairs, servants worked 14 to 18 hour days and lived for the single half day of freedom a Sunday allowed.
