Day 064. The first day of back-to-back meetings for the European Commission, so Ann takes the boys out for the day. Today it's the Museu Militar, down by Santa Apolónia station. It's housed in an 18th-century arsenal where cannon and muskets were actually manufactured, and it holds one of the largest artillery collections in the world: rows of bronze cannon in the courtyard, armour, swords, and a great deal of early firearms. The interior is the surprise, because the old manufacturing halls were decorated in the 19th century with painted ceilings, gilt and enormous azulejo panels, so you walk through battle scenes in blue and white tile with field guns parked underneath them. There's a full Portuguese First World War section too, which is not something you see often. The boys love it. I wrap up my meetings and take them out for dinner at Penalva da Graça, a neighbourhood spot known for its seafood. We get the arroz de marisco, the soupy Portuguese seafood rice, and demolish it. Back home, the boys watch Rango and get a real kick out of it. 📍 Today's stops Museu Militar de Lisboa Penalva da Graça 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 We're a family of four from Halifax, Nova Scotia, spending a year travelling through Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Portugal, Hawaii, French Polynesia, New Zealand and Australia.
