Day 067 - Halloween in Lisbon 🎃👻💀🍫🍬🇵🇹

Day 067. Halloween. The boys and I start the day with fresh €5 haircuts and feel like new men. Then we pack most of our things for the move so we can leave first thing in the morning, and head over to Xavier's house in Alvalade for Halloween, not really knowing what to expect from the Portuguese version. The kids get into costume and painted faces. Xavier brings out a jelly bean game, the Would You Rather kind where you spin for a colour and there's a fifty-fifty chance it's pear or snot. The reactions are worth the entire trip. We head out for trick or treating too early, and learn there's a neighbourhood WhatsApp group that had collectively agreed on seven o'clock rather than six. Lesson noted. Once it starts, the turnout across Alvalade is enormous: familiar enough to our Halifax tradition to feel like home, different enough to be a genuinely new experience. Apartment buildings mean stairs, lots of them, which gives the kids a proper workout between doors. The best discovery of the night is one place grilling great cuts of meat on a barbecue out front and handing out tiny beers to the parents. We are bringing this idea home to Halifax.
