How to tie the Palomar Knot two ways: a quick refresher for those who already know it, then slow and step-by-step for those learning it for the first time.
The Palomar is one of the most common knots for tying line to a hook, lure, swivel, or other terminal tackle. It's simple once you have it, and the trick is remembering the steps when you're out on the water.
I always tie it from the same perspective: right to left through the eye. That way it looks familiar every time. Loop the tag back through the eye and you get a left loop, and that left loop is how I remember the rest: lift the left loop over the top. That's just how I remember it; you can go over or under, and both work.
For visibility, I'm using paracord to represent fishing line and a large circle hook. The process is the same with fishing line.
THE 6 STEPS
1. Through the eye (right to left)
2. Back through the eye to make a left loop
3. Overhand knot (lift the left loop over the top)
4. Hook through the loop
5. Wet it and pull tight (loop seated above the eye, lines side by side)
6. Trim the tag
