From New Mexico Into Colorado | Hiking the Continental Divide Trail

This section of my Continental Divide Trail journey took me from Cuba, New Mexico, north toward South Fork, Colorado — and into the South San Juan Mountains. It was late May, which meant lingering snow, cold winds and plenty of wet, slushy miles through Colorado's high country. Conditions were tiring at times, but manageable, and the landscape made every difficult mile worthwhile. Somewhere along the way, I also had an unexpected encounter with a bear — one of those moments that instantly reminds you that you're only a visitor out here. No big drama, no manufactured adventure.
