Lüneburg was made rich by salt. The same salt also caused parts of the town to sink. For centuries, Lüneburg’s “white gold” travelled across the Baltic Sea and supplied the great medieval herring markets. The wealth it created can still be seen in Lüneburg’s brick gables, merchant houses, churches and remarkably well-preserved old town. But extracting brine beneath Lüneburg also disturbed the ground. In the historic subsidence district, houses became crooked, streets shifted and even the columns inside St Michaelis no longer stand quite parallel. Join me for a walk through one of northern Germany’s most beautiful towns—from the old saltworks and water tower to the Rathaus, Stintmarkt, historic crane and the visibly uneven streets of western Lüneburg. #Lüneburg #GermanyTravel #HanseaticLeague
